Children’s Counselling

Creative counselling for children aged 5 - 12 years old

A young girl with brown hair is holding a stuffed animal, a cow-patterned plush toy, in her hands. She is wearing a cream shirt with pink and orange flower designs on the sleeve. The girl appears to be sitting, and the background shows a blurred indoor setting.

Why Counselling?

Children can experience various difficulties at home, at school, within family/friendships and in other situations.

This can present as dysregulation, challenging behaviours, anxiety, low mood or sleep disturbance to name but a few. As parents and carers, you support these struggles on a day-to-day basis however sometimes a neutral, safe, therapeutic space can provide a child with the valuable opportunity to explore and understand their problems.

My therapeutic approach

I strongly believe that safety and trust are the key to unlocking change. My approach to working therapeutically with children relies on creating a strong therapeutic relationship, one in which a child can feel safe to explore their difficulties without fear of judgement.

For many children, talking about their feelings can be challenging so my work draws on a variety of methods including

  • Play therapy

  • Creative arts

  • Sand tray therapy

  • Music

  • Drama and movement

All my work is child led so I combine these methods and others, to meet the needs of the child to suit how they present in the room.

Creating a safe, playful environment allows a child to access their inner world and in the presence of a trusted adult, this can be externalised to help them to address any difficulties they may be experiencing
